Newly confirmed Chinese President Xi Jinping has demonstrated the flair if not also the substance of a strongman during his maiden overseas trip as head of state.
Unlike his predecessor, ex-president Hu Jintao – who often appeared stiff and wooden while on foreign trips – Xi seemed to be at ease taking the role of a world leader while touring Russia, Tanzania, South Africa and the Republic of Congo.
Even though agreements that he inked with Moscow and the African states had been reached well in advance of his departure, the 59-year-old Xi, who is also Communist Party boss and commander-in-chief, gave observers the impression of a decisive honcho.
