‘Click farms’: China’s propaganda hubs proliferate Facebook likes

While China’s 700 million netizens are blocked from Facebook, Twitter and YouTube, the Chinese Communist Party’s (CCP’s) English-language propaganda machine is harvesting social media fans around the world.

Following top-down orders from president Xi Jinping to “tell China’s story” to the world, Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube are now rife with news geared to a foreign audience.

Even though Chinese propaganda, as analysts say, comes off on social media sites as awkward, China has climbed to new heights in popularity on the web.

Only the BBC has more Facebook fans among English-language news outlets than China’s state-television channel CCTV, and its news channel CCTVNews. The People’s Daily, the official mouthpiece of the Chinese Communist Party, is beating out Fox News, the New York Times, and nearly every one else except CNN and the BBC.
