Better scrimp on the fireworks: Most expensive Fourth of July ever

by WorldTribune Staff, July 1, 2022

For millions of Americans, this year’s Fourth of July celebrations will be the most costly ever — courtesy of the Joe Biden economy.

Fueled by surging prices across the board, the consumer price index rose 8.6% in May from a year ago, the highest increase since December 1981.

Food costs climbed 1.2% in May, bringing the year-over-year gain to 10.1%.

The increase in prices from a year ago includes:

Chicken 17.4%
Ground beef 13.6%
Snacks 13.6%
Carbonated drinks/soda 13.3%
Cookies 12.6%
Lettuce 11.4%
Hot dogs 10.4%
Ice cream 9.6%
Burger buns/bread 8.7%
Potatoes 8.6%
Beer 4.5%
Tomatoes 2%

Other expenses associated with the July Fourth weekend have also surged — including the price of fireworks, up 35%, and propane fuel used to power gas grills, which is up 26% compared to last year, according to an analysis by personal finance site TheBalance.com.

“Democrats’ harmful economic policies are making everything more expensive, and there’s no end in sight,” the National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC) said in a new digital ad.

NRCC Chairman, Rep. Tom Emmer of Minnesota said: “Democrats promised they’d get record inflation under control, but prices have only gone higher. This year’s 4th of July is the most expensive in history, and voters know Democrats are to blame.”

Meanwhile, Joe Biden continues to blame Vladimir Putin for high gas prices and said Americans should be willing to keep paying record-high prices for “as long as it takes” to stop the Russia-Ukraine conflict.

“This is a critical, critical position for the world,” Biden said.
