Democrats, reeling from Hillary Clinton’s defeat and multiple revelations of corruption including collusion to defeat Bernie Sanders in the primary, may look to a Muslim to lead their shattered party.
Sen. Chuck Schumer, who will replace Harry Reid as Senate minority leader, and Sanders are backing the candidacy of Rep. Keith Ellison of Minnesota for the party chair.
Ellison has indicated he would be interested in the post but has yet to declare.
“Ellison has organized letters urging pressure on Israel, and was an advocate of drawing lessons from the UN Goldstone Report following the 2009 Gaza War – a report Israel dismissed as irredeemably flawed and biased,” Arutz Sheva reported on Nov. 13.
Ellison also argued forcefully for language in the Democratic Party platform that would criticize Israel for its West Bank occupation. His argument was rebuffed.
Ellison, the first Muslim elected to Congress, would replace Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz, who resigned this summer under pressure after DNC emails were published by WikiLeaks revealing the animus at top party levels against Sanders’ candidacy.
Wasserman Schultz was replaced temporarily by Donna Brazile, a longtime party activist who subsequently was also damaged by leaked emails documenting her role in sending CNN debate questions to the campaign of Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton.
