Fear of a military coup and major uprisings prompted the highest uniformed officer in China’s leadership to issue an unusual statement warning the nation and the PLA to “more tightly unite around the Party’s Central Committee led by Comrade Hu Jintao.”
Gen. Guo Boxiong, vice chairman of the powerful Central Military Commission and a member of the ruling Politburo, issued the warning on March 25, one day before Chinese leader Hu Jintao was scheduled to leave on a week-long visit to South Korea, India and Cambodia.
