After policy disasters, U.S. AFRICOM to deploy troops to 35 countries

The United States will deploy troops to 35 African countries in 2013 to deal with increasing Al Qaida or Al Qaida-like terrorist threats.

The total number of Africa-bound troops will be around 3,500 and they will come from the 2nd Brigade’s Heavy Combat Team of the First Infantry Division based in Fort Riley, Kansas, according to a Dec. 24 Pentagon announcement.

The U.S. government showed unpreparedness and lack of conceptual consensus on threat levels in Africa before the terrorist attacks on U.S. diplomatic compounds in Egypt and Libya last September.

While the blame game continues in Washington, the Pentagon in December announced it would be imperative to send U.S. combat teams to Africa’s troubled spots to root out key terrorist threats.
