Democrats finally breaking with Obama on Israel

WASHINGTON — For the first time, Democrats in Congress have begun to openly criticize the U.S. policy toward Israel by the administration of President Barack Obama.

Democrats, most of them who serve constituencies that contain a large number of Jews, have broken with Obama and criticized the president's pressure campaign against Israel. The Democrats have warned that U.S. pressure on Israel to stop housing in most of Jerusalem would encourage Iran and other adversaries in the Middle East.

"Israel is our closest ally in the region, yet they continue to receive more criticism than deserved and less support than is required," Rep. Anthony Weiner, a New York Democrat, said.

Weiner was one of more than a dozen Democrats in the House and Senate who have expressed concern Obama's policy in the Middle East, Middle East Newsline reported. The criticism was sparked by a warning by Sen. Charles Schumer that Obama was trying to intimidate Israel, a statement that provoked a harsh White House response.

"Instead of continuing to lash out publicly at our closest ally, the Obama administration should be listening to what Senator Schumer says," Weiner said on April 23. "Schumer is right, and the White House is wrong on Israel."

Weiner has opposed any increase in U.S. aid to the Palestinian Authority amid its boycott of negotiations with Israel. In an address to the Zionist Organization of America, Weiner said the PA must demonstrate its commitment to peace with the Jewish state.

"Until the Palestinians return to the negotiating table, we should not give them another dollar, another [Israeli] shekel," Weiner said.

Rep. Shelley Berkley, a leading member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, said Obama has adopted the Palestinian position that Israel was illegitimate. Ms. Berkley, a Nevada Democrat, said Obama has forgotten history.

"Get off this settlement nonsense," Ms. Berkley also told ZOA. "It is not an impediment to peace."

Congressional sources said Democrats in Congress have been concerned by the sharp drop in Jewish contributions for the November 2010 elections. They said most of the drop was reported in Chicago and New York, regarded as two of the largest Jewish communities in the United States.

In 2010, more than 100 Democrats refused to sign a letter to Obama that urged him to resolve his dispute with Israel. The sources said pro-Israel lobbyists have determined that at least a third of the Democrats in Congress support Obama's campaign against Israel, which included the establishment of a Palestinian state in the West Bank by 2012.

"The only true ally we have in the region is Israel," Rep. Edolphus Towns, a New York Democrat, said. "And we need to wake up and act like it."

Some of the Democrats have warned that Iran would be emboldened by Obama's pressure on Israel. They said the White House must not stop any Israeli military attack on a nuclear Iran.

"Everyone of good will stand up and say it [Israel] has to make its own national security decisions," Rep. Brad Sherman, a California Democrat, said.

It is noteworthy that the one Muslim ally we thought we had, Turkey, has now allied itself with Syria, Iran, and other states aiming to destroy Israel. Even before this, didn't Turkey hassle us about supplying Iraq? Israel is the only western oriented democracy. Turkey was a nascent secular democracy. It has moved toward Islamist positions and has become disengaged from Israel and the US. We need to realize that we seem to need Muslim oil, while Saudi Arabia proselytizes its Wahhabi doctrine, which more or less is endorsed by most Muslim states, which calls for the elimination of ALL infidels, Jews first. Coexistence and tolerance must be a 2-way street, and the Saudi doctrine, directly from the Koran, tolerates Christians and Jews as 'dimmy', children of the book, but clearly second class and taxed quite differently. Obama seems not to realize that the Saudis etc, need our cash as much as we need their oil. Obama DOES seem to realize this by trying to get a renewable energy economy. By kissing the ring of the Saudi while being hostile to Israel he is harming the US!!!

Dear Mr. President: Giving money to any Islamic, Middle East dictatorship is insane. Cut them all off; cut off all Palestinian funding until it's resumed as part of an executed peace agreement. Support the only democracy/republic in the Middle East, give Israel our wholehearted support, stop whining about settlements, it's ridiculous — stop jerking them around!

True friendship is not when your arm is twisted, but when you proactively give support. The Democrat's pocketbooks are hurting, and they decide to support Israel against the Obama administration. These are not the guys I would want to go in the trenches with. Give me real allies, real supporters. The GOP has been a better friend to Israel.

Firstly, I regard Israel as the tip of the spear in the fight for Western Civilization and I would like the US to fully commit to Israel. But I want people to stop using the false talking point that Israel is our "best ally". There has never been a treaty for mutual defense with Israel. Hence, Israel is not an ally at all in the true sense of the word.

Its about time...Wow what took so long? We must also stop this Obama arms embargo on Israel...If Israel needs to bomb Iran they will need all weapons...including bunker busting bombs that Bush approved for Israel and Obama denied....Israel should also have our permission to refuel over Iraq or even at our air bases in the area...Don't hamper Israel when they are doing are work for us...Give them what they need and then get the heck out of there way...This anti-Israel movement in the Obama White House needs to be dealt with and fast...Obama scares the heck out of me more and more everyday that passes...may God help us.
