U.S. firm to build new underground command HQ for Israeli defense ministry

TEL AVIV — Israel plans to build a new underground command headquarters.

The Israeli military intends to construct another command and control center in Tel Aviv.

The C2 center was meant to be located in the defense ministry complex and replace the current underground facility.

"The military found that it needs a much larger facility that would accommodate additional personnel and equipment," an official said.

The C2 center would be used for operational planning as well as conducting war.

The center would cost about $30 million and be constructed by a U.S. company.

Officials said construction could begin in 2011.

They said a tender would be issued by the defense ministry, with the project financed by U.S. military aid to Israel.
