The military employs the term "global jihad" to describe Palestinian
operatives linked to or inspired by Al Qaida. The statement said Jaber was
involved in numerous missile and rocket strikes in Israel.
"Fares was involved in firing rockets at Israeli communities in the
northwestern Negev region in the past few months," the statement said.
"Another militant, who was involved in an attempt to execute a terror attack
was also targeted and injured."
The Al Qaida-aligned squad, said to have targeted the Karni border
terminal, was not identified. About 10 groups, including Army of Islam, Army
of the Nation and Jaljilat, have been operating in the name of Al Qaida in
the Gaza Strip.
Military sources said some of the Al Qaida-aligned fighters were former
Hamas security officers. They said Hamas and the Salafist groups
demonstrated coordination in attacks against Israel.
A Hamas military officer was said to have been killed in a second clash
with the Israeli military. Hamas said Mohammed Said Hassuneh from Gaza City
was killed in what was termed a "jihad mission" in the southern Gaza Strip.
Al Qaida was also said to have encouraged a network in the West Bank.
The PA was reported to have arrested six Palestinians from the northern West
Bank in February. The six were said to have undergone military training.
