As part of the foreign-inspired effort to derail the bill, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton called and spoke with Uganda President Museveni for 45 minutes and was frankly told that European homosexuals were targeting Uganda’s children for sexual purposes. Clinton seemed surprised by the revelations and told Museveni she wasn’t aware of the problem.
Officially, the State Department is supposed to combat human trafficking for sexual purposes. Obama has declared January “National Slavery and Human Trafficking Prevention Month.”
As Accuracy in Media has reported, the situation in Uganda has been distorted and misrepresented by homosexual activists in the media who want people to believe that efforts to protect and preserve traditional family values in Uganda are extreme and unwarranted.
What has not been reported is that, for more than a year, Democratic Party financial sponsor George Soros has been funding efforts in Uganda and elsewhere in Africa to expand rights for homosexuals and legalize prostitution. Ugandan legislators and pro-family activists fought back in 2009, urging legislation to protect children from homosexual predators. A bill was introduced by David Bahati, a Member of Parliament and committed Christian.
Another critical fact that has been carefully omitted from most U.S. media coverage of the controversy is that Uganda previously suffered under a violent homosexual pedophile King who forced himself on young men. Christians in Uganda resisted the King and were tortured and killed, resulting in the annual June 3 Martyr’s Day national holiday.
In Uganda they will “never forget” what happened to the Christian martyrs.
The targeting of Ugandan youth by foreign homosexuals is well-known in Uganda. George Oundo, a former homosexual, has confessed that he recruited school children into homosexuality as part of a program funded by foreign interests and operating in Uganda under the cover of a group called Sexual Minorities Uganda. Several such groups have emerged in Uganda, funded by the Open Society Institute of George Soros and other foreign interests.
Nevertheless, several “gay rights” groups such as the Council for Global Equality and the International Gay and Lesbian Human Rights Commission have been campaigning to have the U.N. declare homosexual activity an international human right.
Resisting this new and insidious form of Western imperialism, Uganda pastors representing many different denominations have been outspoken in their support of the need for new legislation to protect families and children. They say they don’t want homosexuality to become part of their culture, in the same way that it has been accepted in the U.S. and other Western countries and has contributed to the spread of AIDS and other dangerous diseases.
Despite concerns about additional costs on the U.S. health care system, the restriction on AIDS-infected foreigners entering the U.S. was repealed by the Obama Administration without the consent of Congress. It had been on the books for 22 years.
Durbin and his pro-homosexual Democratic colleagues want Uganda to follow Obama’s lead and turn a blind eye to the health impact of the homosexual lifestyle. They told Museveni that he should do “everything” within his power to “block” the advancement of anti-homosexual legislation. Otherwise, they implied, Uganda’s “strong and long-lasting relationship” with the United States could be in jeopardy.
The unstated threat is that foreign aid will be curtailed to Uganda if the country doesn’t comply with the dictates of the international homosexual lobby.
“By creating harsh penalties for homosexuality, this bill not only codifies prejudice, but could also foster an increase in violence towards people simply based on sexual orientation,” the senators claim.
In fact, the bill only applies to cases of open and overt homosexual conduct and behavior. The bill’s much-publicized death penalty provision is mostly designed to punish those who sexually abuse children. The legislation, however, is in preliminary stages and could be changed before final passage.
However, not willing to wait for Uganda to handle its own internal affairs, the global “gay rights” lobby has demanded that the Christian African country stop the bill in its tracks, and that liberal politicians in the U.S. use the leverage of foreign aid to make sure this happens.
In addition to Durbin, signers of the letter include Senators Ben Cardin (Md.), Patty Murray (Wash.), Christopher Dodd (Conn.), Jeff Merkley (Ore.), Sherrod Brown (Ohio), Joseph Lieberman (Conn.), Kirsten Gillibrand (N.Y.), Mark Udall (Colo.), Barbara Boxer (Calif.), Daniel Akaka (Hawaii), and Dianne Feinstein (Calif.).
The liberal senators contends that passage of the bill “will undermine years of positive Ugandan leadership combating HIV infections,” when one provision of the legislation is designed to punish homosexuals with AIDS who have sex and spread the disease.
In another example of blatant foreign interference in Uganda’s internal affairs, the U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights, Navi Pillay, has denounced the bill as draconian and a violation of international human rights. Uganda pastors say the U.N. has been caught distributing information to teenagers in that country encouraging acceptance of the homosexual lifestyle.
The Tom Lantos Human Rights Commission held a hearing on the Uganda legislation on January 21, presided over by Rep. Tammy Baldwin (D-Wis.), the only “out lesbian” in Congress. Several witnesses demanded that President Obama and his wife Michelle openly denounce Uganda’s Christian leaders for proposing to rein in dangerous homosexual practices.
No defenders of Uganda’s right of self-determination were permitted to testify in opposition to the position of the homosexual lobby. The “hearing” was completely stacked, reflecting the tone of much of the U.S. media coverage of the bill.
