The sources said Jihad's political leaders have ordered the Saraya Al
Quds military wing to immediately halt missile and rocket fire. They said
the order was meant to prevent a crisis with Hamas as well as an Israeli
military invasion of the Gaza Strip.
"We expect assassinations, limited incursions and strikes against
specific targets," Jihad military spokesman Abu Ahmed said.
On late Aug. 5, Hamas and Jihad forces clashed west of Gaza City.
Several people were injured and Hamas captured an unreported number of Jihad
fighters.
"One of the [Jihad] fighters was severely beaten in detention and taken
to a hospital," a Jihad source said.
Until 2009, Jihad had been regarded as the most active Palestinian
militia in the rocket war against Israel. Over the last year, the
Iranian-sponsored group was said to have been forced to severely reduce
operations amid a Hamas crackdown and a sharp decline in funding from
Teheran.
"With regard to the aid that we receive from the Islamic republic [of
Iran], it is mainly financial and given to the families of martyrs and
prisoners as well as charity societies," Abu Ahmed told the Saudi-owned
A-Sharq Al Awsat daily. "This aid is absolutely unconditional."
