The U.S. contractor, Apache Corp., has determined major prospects in
Egypt's Western Desert under a project termed 2X.
Apache has launched
efforts to drill at 220 wells in the area, a significant
increase from 2009, when 164 wells were developed.

"As our success continued and the magnitude of the opportunities in the
Western Desert became clear, 2X was conceived to encourage our Egyptian
partners to assist us in ramping up activity and getting the resources
needed to expand operations across the Western Desert," Apache chairman
Steven Farris said.
Apache, with 22 concessions, said it would drill more than 50
exploratory wells. The company is producing 195,000 barrels per day, 27
percent of Egypt's total daily crude oil output.
