Tunisia breaks new ground with shale gas deal

WASHINGTON — Tunisia has become the first country in North Africa to seek the extraction of energy from shale.

Tunisia has contracted with a Canadian firm to begin the process of extracting natural gas from shale in the Ghadames basin. Under the contract, Cygam Energy, based in Calgary, and France's Perenco have been testing the potential of a well in central Tunisia that could produce gas from shale.

"The subsequent first well test results confirm the potential for doubling current gas production to 10 mmscfd [millions of standard cubic feet per day], with possible further increases once the clean-up operation has been completed," Perenco said.

Cygam, with four concessions in Tunisia, has reached a depth of about 4,000 meters in the Silurian gas shales reservoir. The company, in its first hydraulic fracturing operation in the region, said it has pumped 45 tons of sand to expand a fracture in the shale formation.
