The Sudanese Army reported heavy fighting in Darfour in mid-July. The Army said nearly 400 people, including 75 soldiers, have been killed in ground operations.

The United States has sought to mediate an end to the rebellion in Darfour. On July 17, U.S. special envoy Scott Gration arrived in Khartoum to meet United Nations and African Union officials in an effort to advance peace talks.

Sudanese Army Gen. Al Tayeb Osman, commander in Darfour, said the operation targeted the rebel Justice and Equality Movement, Middle East Newsline reported. In a statement on July 16, Osman said more than 300 rebels were killed and another 86 JEM fighters were captured in a week of battles.

This marked the first time in 2010 that the Army acknowledged major casualties. Osman did not elaborate.

JEM, which has rejected reconciliation talks with the Khartoum regime, has confirmed reports of heavy fighting in Darfour but denied the army report of rebel casualties. JEM said it repelled the Army offensive, but gave no details.
