German firm to certify construction by Chinese of oil pipeline bypassing Straits of Hormuz

LONDON — A European company has been selected to facilitate an oil pipeline project by the United Arab Emirates.

Germany's Germanischer Lloyd, or GL, was chosen to provide technical assurance and certification of the 400-kilometer, 48-inch pipeline designed to bypass the Strait of Hormuz, the world's leading oil shipment passage and under threat from neighboring Iran.

The pipeline would begin from Habshan in the UAE emirate of Abu Dhabi and reach the main oil terminal at Fujairah.
