Iraq, in first, using own drones to patrol borders

BAGHDAD — Iraq has deployed its own unmanned aerial vehicles for security missions for first time.

The Interior Ministry said security forces were using unidentified UAVs along the Iraqi borders, Middle East Newsline reported. The ministry said the UAVs contained advanced reconnaissance payloads.

"These planes are equipped with the latest technology, which enables Iraqi forces to track those meaning to harm Iraq," ministry spokesman Maj. Gen. Abdul Karim Khalaf said.

Khalaf, who also directs the ministry's command center, said the UAVs have succeeded in identifying and tracking infiltrators. He said this marked the first UAV missions by the Iraqi security forces.

Officials said the U.S. military has transferred surplus UAV systems to the Iraqi military and security forces. They said U.S. advisers have helped operate the UAVs and trained Iraqi personnel.
