The ban has been maintained amid demonstrations in the West Bank against
Arab regimes. On Feb. 22, about 50 Palestinians demonstrated in
Ramallah against Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi.
PA police and security forces surrounded the demonstrators and they
dispersed without incident. The protesters called on Gadhafi to resign.
"The turmoil in Libya is an internal affair," a PA statement said.
In early February, the PA broke up demonstrations against the regime of
Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak. Some of the protests included leading
members of Fatah and ended with calls for PA Chairman Mahmoud Abbas to
resign.
For his part, Abbas has sought to organize demonstrations
against Israel and the United States. On Feb. 18, Washington vetoed an
anti-Israeli resolution in the United Nations Security Council.
The PA has also organized demonstrations in support of Abbas. In late
February, PA civil servants were ordered to demonstrate in several cities in
support of the chairman.
Officials said the PA was exploring a proposal to form a unity
government with the opposition Hamas movement. They said the proposal by
Prime Minister Salam Fayad would allow Hamas to retain control over the Gaza
Strip.
"The security concept practiced by Hamas in the Gaza Strip should be
brought under an official framework because it is not different from what is
practiced by the Palestinian Authority in the West Bank," Fayad told a
briefing on Feb. 21.

Israel has not been very creative in its international political dealings, and especially, in its dealings with the US and the UN. Perhaps it should adopt variances of some of the approaches that have proved so successful for Islamist and other causes. Here are a few possibilities:
1. Declare a "Day of Rage" at least once a month, in which anti-Semitism is decried. Each month, name a country and specifically identify its acts of anti-Semitism, and rage against it.
2. Conduct protests at least once monthly against the UN, for its failure to prevent Hezbolla from arming in Lebanon. Each month, name a specific instance in which violations were noted by Israel and reported to the UN, and the UN did nothing.
3. Sponsor an anti-slavery investigation at the UN, naming the countries that previously or currently permit slavery, and cite examples. If the UN refuses to conduct the investigation, protest at the UN, and conduct and publicize the investigation on Facebook, and, if possible, US TV.
4. Sponsor a Women's Rights investigation at the UN, naming countries that previously, or currently, permit ritual mutilation of women, deny women education, or limit women's rights, and cite examples. If the UN refuses to conduct the investigation, protest at the UN, and conduct and publicize the investigation on Facebook, and, if possible, US TV.
5. Sponsor an investigation of abuse of children at the UN, naming countries that previously, or currently, kill female children, work children in sweatshops, sell them, or use them in their military activities, and cite examples. If the UN refuses to conduct the investigation, conduct and publicize the investigation on Facebook, and, if possible, US TV.
6. Give political recognition to the Kurds and the borders of their homeland, which lie in Turkey, Iraq, Iran, and Syria, and allow them to open an embassy in Israel. Petition the UN to open Kurdish refugee camps and grant them UN membership.
7. Establish an international media organization, headquartered in Israel, in which journalists who have been exiled, persecuted, prosecuted, penalized or otherwise punished for reporting the news in their homelands may have their works published and disseminated.
8. Publish and disseminate a "Freedom List", on which all "human rights" and all UN members are listed, and indicate which freedoms are available in each member country.
