CAIRO — Egyptians have attacked another foreign embassy — this time that of Saudi Arabia.

Officials said Saudi Arabia has filed a formal protest against the Egyptian government for an attack on the kingdom's embassy in Cairo. They said Saudi ambassador Ahmed Abdul Aziz Katan provided a video of the recent attack.

"This was an attack on Saudi sovereign land," Katan said.

The Saudi ambassador did not say when the attack took place. This marked the second attack by Egyptians on a foreign embassy over the last month, the first on the Israeli embassy on Sept. 10.

Katan has sent the video of the attack on the embassy to Egypt's attorney general. The ambassador said unidentified assailants stormed the diplomatic compound, smashed windows, destroyed a fence and torched Saudi vehicles.

In a statement, Katan called on the military regime in Cairo to investigate the attack. He said the Saudi kingdom has sought to preserve diplomatic and other relations with Egypt.

Under President Hosni Mubarak, ousted in February, Riyad was a leading ally of Cairo. The Saudi leadership was said to have angered the Egyptian opposition by Riyad's strong support for Mubarak.
