N. Korean military document ties 'Captain' Kim Jong-Un to provocations against South

The heir-apparent to Kim Jong-Il, his youngest son Kim Jong-Un, masterminded last year’s torpedo and artillery attacks on South Korea to establish a military record and win support from the powerful People’s Army, according to a North Korean military document.

Smoke rises from Yeonpyeong Island after North Korea's attack.
North Korea launched a submarine attack on South Korea’s Navy corvette Cheonan in March last year, which left 46 sailors dead. The warship exploded and sank off the South’s Baeknyeong Island, just south of the western maritime border, known as the Northern Limit Line. In November, the North attacked South Korea’s populated island Yeonpyeong, close to Baeknyeong, with artillery and rockets, killing two marines and two civilians.

Pyongyang expressed regret at the civilian deaths caused by its shelling of Yeonpyeong, but accused the South of using the civilians as human shields.

The North has consistently denied its involvement in the sinking of the Cheonan warship.

Two months before the deadly torpedo attack, Kim Jong-Un met a group of North Korean military leaders and told them that the inter-Korean situation “will become very tense in February and March,” an indication that he was preparing for the military attack, according to the military document obtained by South Korea’s top daily of the Chosun Ilbo.

“As the South made a fuss about defending the Northern Limit Line, Captain Kim stressed the need to kick the enemy in the teeth,” the document was quoted as saying. Captain Kim refers to Kim Jong-Un who is also called “Young Captain” and “Comrade, Captain.” Similar propaganda refers to his father, Kim Jong-Il, as “General.”
