The Khartoum regime said it would acquire and install a nuclear reactor
by 2020. Official said the reactor would be used for the generation of
electricity.
"The Electricity and Dams Ministry has already started preparing for the
project to produce power from nuclear energy in cooperation with the
International Atomic Energy Agency and is expected to build the first
nuclear power plant in the year 2020," Sudanese Atomic Energy Agency
director-general Mohammed El Tayeb said.
In a statement on Aug. 22, El Tayeb said an IAEA delegation would arrive
in Sudan on Aug. 23 to discuss the acquisition of a nuclear reactor, Middle East Newsline reported. The
official said Khartoum began drafting nuclear plans in early 2010.
The State Department has designated Sudan a terrorist sponsor, and the
International Criminal Court charged Sudanese President Omar Bashir with
three counts of genocide. The department's designation has resulted in
sanctions on Khartoum, supported by China and Iran.
Officials said the first stage of the program would involve nuclear
research. They said IAEA would be asked to help find and deliver a reactor.
