Sources: Gadhafi paying Polisario mercenaries $10,000 each to fight for him

WASHINGTON — Algeria was said to have sent a proxy force to help the Libyan regime of Col. Moammar Gadhafi.

A former U.S. diplomat said Algeria has approved the deployment of the Polisario Front in Libya to join the Gadhafi regime in its war against the rebels. Former U.S. ambassador Edward Gabriel said Gadhafi has paid Polisario fighters to cross Algeria into Libya to fight the rebels and its NATO allies.

"Credible sources report that hundreds of Polisario mercenaries are being paid $10,000 each by Gadhafi to cross Algeria into Libya to fight NATO-led forces and kill Libyan protesters and rebels," Gabriel said.

In a column on May 16 in the congressional daily The Hill, Gabriel did not say how many Polisario fighters were working for Gadhafi. He quoted Libyan rebel leaders as saying that Algeria flew the Polisario mercenaries into Tripoli in April.

"If the details about mercenaries received by NATO officials are accurate, both the leadership of the Polisario and Algerian authorities stand complicit in Gadhafi's efforts to reinforce his mercenary army," Gabriel said.

Officials acknowledged that the administration of President Barack Obama was concerned over Algerian help to Gadhafi. They said the issue was raised with Algeria's leadership, including during talks over the past two weeks in Washington. Algeria has been a member of NATO's Mediterranean Dialogue and provided ports to warships from the United States and other members of the Western alliance.

"Senior NATO officials have received information that Moammar Gadhafi is spending millions to hire mercenaries from the Polisario Front in Algeria and elsewhere to help fight the UN-backed coalition and quash Libyans who oppose his dictatorial regime," Gabriel said.

Gabriel, a former ambassador to Morocco and now a consultant to the North African kingdom, also cited reports that Algeria sent 500 combat light trucks to the Gadhafi regime. No further details were given.

"It is inconceivable that hundreds of Polisario mercenaries could be hired in the first place, or travel more than 1,000 miles from the isolated, Polisario-run camps in southwestern Algeria, without the tacit, if not explicit, support of Polisario and Algerian leaders," Gabriel said.

Tunisia has also sought to stop the flow of Polisario and other fighters from Algeria. On May 18, the Tunisian Army clashed with foreign fighters near the border with Algeria and three people, including a colonel, were killed.

Officials said the clash involved nine members of Al Qaida Organization in the Islamic Maghreb, three of them Algerians. AQIM was said to have acquired surface-to-air missiles from Libyan Army arsenals captured by the rebels.

This article is not ridiculous, actually it makes perfect sense since the front of the Polisario is per se a mercenary organization paid by the Algerian JUNTA to create a puppet state in the south of Morocco. There has never been such a thing as an independent Sahara or SADR. The Polisario are doing in Libya what they were invented to do in the Moroccan Sahara, fighting for money, and since Gadhafi used to fund them and arm them, they obviously have to fight for their master.

The problem dear ambassador isn't the recognition of the Polisario or not but why you help gaddafi in his war against libyans and how much he gives to sahrawi soldiers

Dear Algerian propagandist, why don't you inform the public about the $300 billion the Algerian junta has spent buying support and weapons for the mercenary organisation the Polisario Front? Fact of the matter is the news of NATO's claim was first reported in the British newspaper the Telegraph. Moreover, the Libyans themselves have repeatedly accused Algeria and the Polisario of aiding Gadhafi - and this was an accusation first supported by many Algerian papers. Down with the junta!

The evidence apparently comes from captured mercenaries, just as was the case with those from Chad, who were allegedly paid even more money (30k was reported). The videos of these soldiers patrolling Tripoli are on Youtube. It is obvious that Gaddafi can not count on the loyalty of his own soldiers to do the brutal dirty work of killing his civilians so he is, like many brutal dictators that came before him, relying on mercenaries from neighboring countries. This is not so far-fetched an idea. Call it propaganda if you like but do you think that Gaddafi will not stoop to this level to maintain control? If so, you are naive.

Ridiculous article from a pro-Moroccan occupation lobbyist, whose only aim is to discredit the long-running Sahrawi struggle for their rights: human rights, and above all the right on self-determination, recognized by a big majority of countries and international organizations. Morocco had military occupied Western Sahara since 1976, killing thousands of Sahrawi civilians, torturing more than 30,000 of them, and making "dissapeared" more than 600 Sahrawis. Also, perhaps this article try to evade attention from the fact that Morocco is the only Maghreb country joining the NATO-Gulf states alliance that is literally destroying Libya. Also, another interesting point is the invitation of the "Gulf Cooperation Council" (the same ones that military invaded Bahrain) to Morocco and Jordan to join the organization, making clear that the aim of that organization is mainteining the bloody, totalitarian & corrupt Arab monarchies AT ANY COST. No proof of POLISARIO fighters or even Sahrawi individuals between the suppossed "mercenaries" had been made, as happened before with Algerians. Simply propaganda war.

The article claims that members of the Frente POLISARIO were involved in the ongoing conflict in Libya. We categorically deny these baseless allegations and challenge all those parties that propagate these kinds of preposterous accusations to bring forth any evidence in their possession to prove their claims. Needless to say, these unfounded allegations emanate from those quarters that have vested interest in discrediting our liberation movement. The Frente POLISARIO is an internationally recognised liberation movement whose sole aim is to liberate Western Sahara from Morocco’s illegal occupation and to enable the Sahrawi people to exercise their internationally recognised right to self-determination and independence. Moreover, the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic (SADR) is a full and founding member of the African Union. Its position as to the on-going conflict in Libya stems from the same policy of the African Union, and thus it has publically reaffirmed its strong commitment to the respect for the unity and territorial integrity of Libya as well as its full support for the efforts deployed by the AU High-Level ad-hoc Committee on Libya.
