Chevron helping Bahrain double kingdom's refinery capacity

ABU DHABI — Bahrain intends to more than double its oil refinery capacity over the next five years.

Officials said the Gulf Cooperation Council kingdom has accelerated a project to modernize its oil refinery.

They said the effort was being led by the U.S. firm Chevron in cooperation with the state-owned Bahrain Petroleum Co.

"The work on enhancing the production of oil at refinery is on the right track as Chevron is currently working on different models aimed at enhancing oil production," Bahrain Petroleum chief executive officer Faisal Al Mahroos said.

Bahrain's current refinery capacity was reported at 262,000 barrels a day. Officials said the Sunni Arab kingdom plans to reach a refinery capacity of 600,000 barrels per day.
