U.S. allows purchase of oil from Libyan rebels

WASHINGTON — The United States has approved the import of crude oil by Libyan rebels.

Industry sources said the U.S. government has begun allowing private firms to negotiate and procure crude oil from areas of Libya held by the rebels.

They said the measure was meant to assist the rebel movement in its war to oust Col. Moammar Gadhafi.

"The purchases have been quite small but could grow if necessary," an industry source said.

The sources said the U.S. government quietly allowed companies to buy Libyan rebel oil as early as April. They said European companies have served as agents in these transactions.
