Yemen for sixth time in 2013 captures Turkish-linked arms shipment

ANKARA — Yemen has captured another Turkish-linked boat filled with
weapons for insurgents.

On July 9, the Yemen Coast Guard intercepted a freighter off the coast
of Yemen near the port of Hudeida.

Officials said the freighter, which sailed under the flag of Comoros, contained a crew of eight Turks.

“They were arrested on suspicion of illegally trying to transfer weapons,” an official said.

This marked at least the sixth Yemeni report of the capture of Turkish weapons in 2013. Officials said the arms were believed to have been ordered by insurgency groups, including those linked to Al Qaida.

Turkey has pledged to cooperate with Yemen to stop arms smuggling.
The Turkish Foreign Ministry reported an intensified security dialogue with
Sanaa to end the weapons shipments.

“All manners of cooperation with the Yemeni authorities will continue in
order to investigate the issue in all aspects,” the Turkish Foreign Ministry
said on July 9.
