Yemen cites intelligence that Iran directed Shi’ite takeover of capital

ABU DHABI — Is Sanaa, the capital of Yemen, in danger of falling to Iranian-backed Shi’ite rebels? The answer is yes.

Yemen has now determined that Iran was supporting the Shi’ite rebel movement in its latest drive against the Sunni Arab government.

Officials said the government and intelligence community concluded that Iran was guiding the Al Houthi movement in its takeover of Sanaa.

They said the Teheran regime, particularly Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, helped equip, train and mentor Shi’ite rebels throughout northern Yemen.

“Yemen has cogent evidence about Iran’s support to Al Houthis,” Yemen National Security Agency director Gen. Ali Al Ahmadi said.
