The “umbrella revolution” that is sweeping the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (SAR) has taken the Hong Kong government and Beijing by surprise.

President Xi Jinping, who is noted for his scorched-earth tactics against separatists and dissidents in Tibet and Xinjiang, risks being criticized by heads of rival Communist Party factions should Hong Kong – and Chinese – law-enforcement forces fail to quell the pro-democracy crusade.

After ordering the police to fire 87 rounds of tear gas at “Occupy Central” (OC) protestors last Sunday – which resulted in several tens of thousands of citizens hitting the streets to protect the thousands of students participating in the orderly civil-disobedience crusade – the SAR administration under hugely unpopular Chief Executive C. Y. Leung had no choice but to call off the out-gunned cops.
