Despite reports about challenges to his power, President and Communist Party General Secretary Xi Jinping has quietly — and relentlessly — built up his personal faction centered upon cadres associated with the prosperous coastal province of Zhejiang.
Members of the so-called Zhejiang Clique are tipped for large-scale promotions at the pivotal 19th Party Congress next year.
Similar to what ex-president Jiang Zemin did in grooming the Shanghai Faction, Xi has focused his attention on elevating officials who had served under him when he was Party Secretary (the top official) of Zhejiang Province from 2002 to 2007. …
Also significant is the fact that a disproportionately large number of Zhejiang officials recommended by Xi have been picked to work in key Central Leading Groups or Central Commissions such as the Central Leading Group on Comprehensively Deepening Reforms (CLGCDR); the Central Leading Group on Finance and Economics (CLGFE) and the Central National Security Commission (CNSC).
