As world eyes China’s economy, Xi still focused on consolidating power with the PLA

Despite reports that the China’s GDP is about to surpass that of the United States, much of Chinese politics is still governed by Maoist norms of the 1930s and 1940s.

One of Chairman’s Mao Zedong’s most famous dictums — “power grows out of the barrel of a gun” — has been closely followed by President and Commander-in-Chief Xi Jinping. Xi has since coming to power two years ago relentlessly augmented his clout by ensuring the loyalty of senior officers of the People’s Liberation Army (PLA).

A series of year-end reshuffles last November and December witnessed the rise of the so-called Nanjing Military Region (NMR) Faction, or generals who first distinguished themselves in the NMR, which covers Shanghai and the provinces of Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Fujian, Jiangxi and Anhui.

Given the fact that Xi has worked in Fujian, Zhejiang and Shanghai, he is on intimate terms with PLA officers from this region.
