WASHINGTON — Saudi Arabia has been secretly hosting a U.S. military
base assigned to attack Al Qaida in neighboring Yemen.

U.S. media reports asserted that the CIA was using a remote base in
Saudi Arabia for attacks in Yemen. The report, which were not denied by the administration of President Barack Obama, said the Saudi base was used for an attack that killed Anwar Al Awlaki, deemed a leading operative of Al Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula.

The U.S. base in Saudi Arabia was said to have been established in 2011
as part of the war against AQAP.

The reports said John Brennan, nominated to be next director of CIA, played a major role in the winning Saudi agreement for the U.S. operations.

This marked the first reports of a U.S. combat presence in Saudi Arabia. By 2004, the U.S. military withdrew combat troops from Saudi Arabia in an effort to prevent a backlash from the invasion of neighboring Iraq.

The UAV base operated by the CIA was constructed in 2011, the reports
said. The reports did not provide the location of the base.
