AMMAN — Jordan has come under increasing domestic pressure not to join the U.S.-led war against Islamic State of Iraq and Levant.
The Islamic opposition as well as parliamentarians have lobbied against the participation of Jordan in any anti-ISIL coalition. The critics warned that the Hashemite kingdom could face a backlash from both Islamist and secular activists.
“We must resist imperialist schemes and continue to raise the motto of democracy, independence and freedom,” six secular political parties said in a statement.
At the same time, 21 parliamentarians urged Amman to remain neutral in the U.S. campaign against ISIL. They said the war against ISIL marked an unacceptable foreign intervention in the Levant.
