After being slighted by U.S. Secretary of Defense Ash Carter as “unprofessional,” Russia’s military jabbed at CNN professionalism after a report citing U.S. intelligence officials said that four Russian cruise missiles fired at Syria from warships in the Caspian Sea fell short,  landing in Iran.

Russian warships in the Caspian Sea began firing cruise missiles at targets in Syria on Oct. 7.

The CNN report on Oct. 8 quoted anonymous U.S. officials as saying one of the errant missiles may have caused casualties.

“Any professional knows that during these operations we always fix the target before and after impact. All our cruise missiles hit their target,” Russian foreign ministry spokesman Gen. Igor Konashenkov said on Oct. 9.

“In contrast to CNN we do not talk with reference to anonymous sources. We show the launch of our rockets and the targets they struck.”

Moscow confirmed on Oct. 7 that its warships in the Caspian Sea had launched a barrage of missiles at Syrian targets which passed over Iran and Iraq.

U.S. Defense Secretary Ashton Carter on Oct. 8 said Moscow was engaging in unpredictable military action that has become a huge concern for the United States and its allies in the Middle East.

“We’ve seen increasingly unprofessional behavior from Russian forces. They violated Turkish airspace … They shot cruise missiles from the Caspian Sea without warning,” Carter said.
