London warns it may cancel arms exports to Israel

LONDON — Britain has warned of an imminent suspension of defense licenses for Israel.

The government of Prime Minister David Cameron said it targeted a range of arms export licenses for Israel. The licenses were identified as components for aircraft, main battle tanks and radars.

“The UK government has not been able to clarify if the export license criteria are being met,” Business Secretary Vince Cable said.

In a statement on Aug. 12, Cable said 12 licenses would be suspended unless Israel agreed to a permanent ceasefire with Hamas. The minister said the suspension would be followed by an investigation into Israel’s use of British weapons.

“In light of that uncertainty, we have taken the decision to suspend these existing export licenses in the event of a resumption of significant hostilities,” Cable said.

Last month, the British parliament reported Israeli orders for components of missiles, unmanned aerial vehicles and MBTs. A parliamentary committee also reported the export of British body armor.

Officials said any British suspension would not affect Israeli defense systems. They cited the Iron Dome missile and rocket defense system, which played a major role in foiling Hamas rocket attacks in the war in July and August.

Cameron has faced a crisis within his Cabinet amid the Gaza war. So far, two ministers have resigned including the Cabinet’s only Muslim member.
