ABU DHABI — The United Arab Emirates has been moving ahead with a
major offshore energy project.

Artificial islands have been built in the shallows above the Zakum oil field.

The UAE Oil Ministry has been advancing in the first phase of the Zakum offshore oil field.

The ministry has awarded the state-owned National Petroleum Construction Co. and France’s Technip an $800 million contract to build facilities at Zakum, located 84 kilometers from Abu Dhabi.

“The scope of work for the awarded package includes 240 kilometers of sub-sea pipelines, 128 kilometers of sub-sea composite and fiber optic cables, almost 30,000 tons of offshore/onshore structures including jackets, riser platforms, flare towers, bridges, modules, 37 initial production well facilities on artificial islands, extensive brownfield modifications at the existing Zakum central complex and at seven wellhead platforms,” National Petroleum said.

Under the three-year project National Petroleum, based in Abu Dhabi, would lead the consortium and direct all construction. Technip, with an
operating center in the UAE, would be responsible for engineering.
