U.S. intelligence identifies 45 chemical weapons sites in Syria

WASHINGTON — The United States has identified at least 45 chemical weapons facilities in Syria.

Officials said the U.S. intelligence community has mapped out suspected CW sites under the control of the regime of Syrian President Bashar Assad. They said the intelligence community in cooperation with the State Department determined that Assad was operating at least 45 CW facilities.

“In the U.S. view, there probably are at least 45 sites associated with Syria’s CW program, nearly half of which, we previously assessed, housed exploitable quantities of CW materials,” a senior State Department official said.

Meanwhile, a report said Syrian President Bashar Assad has transferred most of his chemical weapons arsenal to Alawite strongholds along the Mediterranean Sea, a report said.
