U.S. intel: Al Qaida has recruited at least 70 Americans to fight Syria

WASHINGTON — The U.S. intelligence community has determined that Al Qaida militias were recruiting Americans for the war in Syria.

Officials said the intelligence community has detected Al Qaida recruitment of Americans both in the United States and abroad. They said Americans, particularly those of Muslim backgrounds were being sent to such conflicts as the civil war in Syria and Yemen.

“We are focused on trying to figure out what our people are up to, who should be spoken to, who should be followed, who should be charged,” FBI director James Comey said.

In a briefing on Jan. 9, officials said at least 70 Americans have been recruited by Al Qaida, including Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant, to fight against the regime of Syrian President Bashar Assad.
