WASHINGTON — The U.S. Joint Chiefs of Staff has reported differences with Israel in the interpretation of intelligence on Iran’s nuclear program.
Officials said the U.S. intelligence community regarded the latest information as supporting Washington’s position that Teheran could still be swayed by economic sanctions while Israel concluded that Iran was in its last phase of nuclear weapons development.
“You can take two countries and interpret the same intelligence and come out with two different conclusions,” Gen. Martin Dempsey, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, said. “I’d suggest to you that’s what’s really happening here.”
In a briefing on Aug. 19, Dempsey became the highest-ranking U.S. official to acknowledge an intelligence dispute with Israel.
The Army general said intelligence on Iran formed the basis of a biweekly teleconference with Israeli Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Benny Gantz.
