U.S. backing called key for Qatar’s covert dealings with terror groups, Iran

TEL AVIV — Qatar has become a major player in the Arab world because of its pro-Islamist policy and support by the United States, a report said.

The Institute for National Security Studies asserted that Qatar raised its profile through an alliance with Iran, United States and Hamas. In a report, the institute said the alliance allowed Qatar to challenge such Arab powers as Egypt and Saudi Arabia.

“In modern history, it is difficult to find a similar instance of a country so small and young that has carried out so ambitious a foreign policy,” the report, titled “Countering Qatar’s Negative Regional Impact,” said.

Authors Kobi Michael and Yoel Guzansky said Qatar was supporting what they termed “terrorist organizations” as well as mediating between Iran and the West. They said Doha also engaged in Western covert efforts against Teheran.
