U.S. blogger cites ‘high-level’ source for Israel plan to strike Iran

WASHINGTON — An American blogger has posted what he called
Israel’s military operation against Iran.

Blogger Richard Silverstein, who earlier reported U.S. intelligence
operations against the Israeli embassy in Washington, released what he
termed an Israeli multi-stage operation to destroy Iran’s nuclear
infrastructure.

Silverstein, saying he acquired the latest document from a
“high-level Israeli source,” outlined a plan in which Israel would paralyze Teheran through an unprecedented cyber-attack, followed by a barrage of ballistic and cruise missiles.

“The Internet, telephones, radio and television, communications
satellites, and fiber optic cables leading to and from critical
installations — including underground missile bases at Khorramabad and Isfahan — will be taken out of action,” Silverstein, quoting from the document, wrote in his Tikkun Olam blog. “The electrical grid throughout Iran will be paralyzed and transformer stations will absorb severe damage from carbon fiber munitions which are finer than a human hair, causing electrical short circuits whose repair requires their complete removal.”

The next stage would be a missile strike by Israel Navy Dolphin-class
submarines in the Gulf. Silverstein said the missiles would
contain warheads designed to penetrate hardened nuclear targets as well as
command and control facilities.

“Among the targets approved for attack — Shihab-3 and Sejil ballistic
missile silos, storage tanks for chemical components of rocket fuel,
industrial facilities for producing missile control systems, centrifuge
production plants and more,” Silverstein wrote.

This was not the first time that Silverstein was said to serve as a
conduit for classified information. In September 2011, Silverstein published
information acquired from an FBI translator of the bugging of the Israeli
embassy in Washington. The translator, an Israeli attorney, was sentenced to
20 months in prison.

Silverstein, deemed a severe critic of Israel, acknowledged that the
purported plan appeared to be a “press release” drafted by an aide of Prime
Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. He said another blogger had been given a
similar plan from an Israeli source.

The purported attack plan was posted on at least two American blogs in
this month amid what appeared to be a debate in Israel over the feasibility
of destroying Iran’s nuclear infrastructure. Senior officials in the
administration of U.S. President Barack Obama have questioned whether such
an operation could stop Teheran.

The purported attack plan included the use of a so-called Israeli radar
satellite to track and report on Iranian nuclear facilities. The satellite
would be linked to Israel Air Force fighter-jets that would enter Iran in a
second wave of strikes.

“These IAF planes will be armed with electronic warfare gear previously
unknown to the wider public, not even revealed to our U.S. ally,”
Silverstein wrote. “This equipment will render Israeli aircraft invisible.
Those Israeli war planes which participate in the attack will damage a
short-list of targets which require further assault.”
