The deaths of Hamid Mokhtarband and Brig. Gen. Farshad Hassounizadeh marked the third major blow to IRGC’s command structure in less than a week. Gen. Hossein Hamadani, another top commander, was killed on Oct. 8.

Mokhtarband and Hassounizadeh were killed while assisting the Bashar Assad regime in its battle against ISIL, according to reports by the Tasnim and Fars news agencies and Press TV.

Iran continues to insist it has no forces in Syria and that any personnel in the country are there to provide “military advice.”

Press TV reported that Hassounizadeh was in Syria to “defend the holy shrine of Hazrat Zeinab, the granddaughter of Prophet Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him), in the country’s capital of Damascus.”

The IRGC released a statement on Oct. 9 that said Hamadani had been sent to Syria to advise the military and defend Shia shrines in the country.
