TEL AVIV — Turkey, despite a military and political boycott, has been considering acquiring natural gas from Israel.

97284474-turkey-israelIndustry sources said the government of Turkish Prime Minister Recep Erdogan has approved negotiations with an Israeli consortium for offshore gas.

The sources said Ankara was considering plans to build a gas pipeline from Israeli gas reserves in the eastern Mediterranean to Turkey.

“In addition to this price, the bids will be evaluated on the basis of their commercial terms, including the take or pay condition and the capacity of the gas purchased,” Israel’s business daily, Globes said.

In a report on March 25, Globes, citing unnamed sources, said Turkey could acquire seven billion cubic meters a year of Israeli gas.

One Turkish bidder was identified as Turcas Petrol, which submitted a $2.5 billion plan
to build an underwater pipeline from Israel to the southern Turkish
province of Mersin.
