ANKARA — Turkey has launched another military offensive against
Kurdish insurgents around Iraq.

The Turkish military said air and ground units were operating in the
southern province of Hakari in late July.

Turkish warplanes and attack helicopters have targeted PKK strongholds in northern Iraq.

A military statement said at least 39 suspected fighters of the Kurdish Workers Party were killed in the latest campaign, said to have begun on July 22.

The statement cited a vast PKK infrastructure in southeastern
Turkey. The military said it destroyed PKK weapons and munitions arsenals as well as captured supplies of food and medicine for fighters.

The military said the operation included F-16 multi-role aircraft and
AH-1W Cobra helicopter strikes against PKK strongholds in Iraq. Infantry units were said to have been operating in Turkey’s Goman mountains.

The operation was launched after the PKK tried to gain control over
areas in southeastern Turkey. The military said Kurdish insurgents blocked
the road to the village of Yigitler and began interrogating residents.

The military did not cite casualties among soldiers. But military
sources confirmed a PKK roadside bombing on Aug. 1 that killed two Turkish
soldiers in the Diyarbakir province.
