CAIRO — Tunisia has reported the capture of Al Qaida fighters.

The Interior Ministry said counter-insurgency units captured nine suspected Al Qaida fighters west of Tunis.

The ministry said the detainees were members of the so-called Takfiri movement, a term often used by Arab regimes for Al Qaida.

“Authorities received intelligence information that Takfiri elements were preparing to conduct terror attacks in Tunisia,” the Interior Ministry said.

In a statement on April 28, the Interior Ministry said security forces raided a suspected Al Qaida stronghold in a western suburb of Tunis. The statement said authorities were interrogating the detainees.

Officials said Al Qaida was recruiting young Muslims in the shantytowns
around Tunis and other cities in the North African state. They said much of
the recruitment was conducted through Ansar Al Sharia.
