Donald Trump said on Aug. 10 that he supports sending U.S. ground troops to fight Islamic State of Iraq and Levant (ISIL) and that the key to defeating the terror group is to “knock out the source of their wealth” – oil.

“They have great money because they have oil,” Trump said. “Every place where they have oil I would knock the hell out of them.”

Trump continues to lead the crowded field of Republican candidates for the 2016 presidential nomination.

“I would knock out the source of their wealth, the primary sources of their wealth, which is oil,” Trump said on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” program. “And in order to do that, you would have to put boots on the ground.”

“I would knock the hell out of them but I’d put a ring around it and I’d take the oil for our country.”

Trump added that any money the terror group has in the banking system would also have to be targeted.

“You have to cut that off,” he said.

Polling after last’s week’s first prime-time televised debate for Republican presidential candidates showed Trump maintaining a lead he has had since entering the fray. An NBC News online poll conducted by Survey Monkey put Trump at 23 percent with the next closest competitor being Texas Sen. Ted Cruz at 13 percent.
