Top priority for Kim Jong-Un: Not the economy, but winning military’s support

North Korea’s new ruler Kim Jong-Un has been increasingly inspecting military units — a sign of increasing tension with neighboring countries and an effort to gain the trust of the country’s ruling military establishment.

Kim, who has ascended to power in December after the death of his father, Kim Jong-Il, has conducted “on-site” inspections tours of military units 12 times so far this year, according to South Korea’s Unification Ministry.

In his latest public activity, Kim visited the Large Combined Unit 264 of the Korean People’s Army and Army Unit No. 985. He was accompanied by top military leaders, including Chief of the General Staff of the People’s Army Ri Yong-Ho and People’s Armed Forces Minister Kim Yong-Chun, the North’s official Korean Central News Agency said on Feb. 8.

The report did not disclose the locations, but Seoul’s defense officials said No. 264 is located in Hamheung on the country’s east coast.

Earlier this week, Kim visited Combined Unit 597, the Navy fleet located in Hamheung in charge of waters off the east coast.
