Iranian parliament member Hedayatollah Mir-Moradzehi said on Sept. 13 that Saudi Arabia should no longer be in charge of the hajj ceremony at the Grand Mosque.

“This incident is the result of the Saudi regime’s imprudence and carelessness and they should have increased the safety factor for the construction projects around Kaaba,” Mir-Moradzehi told Fars.

The lawmaker insisted that Kaaba, the building at the center of the mosque, doesn’t belong just to Saudi Arabia, is for all Muslims and there should be cooperation in running and administering the hajj ceremony.

Mir-Moradzehi told the Iranian news agency that the site would be more secure and better results would come if Islamic countries within the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) take the responsibility of handling the hajj ceremony.

Javad Jahangirzadeh, a member of the Iranian parliament’s National Security and Foreign Policy Commission, told Fars that “the Saudi regime showed that it doesn’t have enough capability to secure the safety of the pilgrims and manage the hajj ceremony.”
