The Obama administration is naive if it thinks the nuclear accord will lead to restored relations between the United States and Iran, a top Iranian cleric said on Sept. 24.

“The U.S. wants to say that, following [the conclusion of] the JCPOA, the ice has been broken between the two countries; but that is not the case,” Ayatollah Seyyed Ahmad Khatami said in a sermon following the Eid al-Adha prayers in Teheran.

“We are enemies with the U.S. because the U.S. supports the usurping Zionist regime (Israel).”

Khatami echoed the words of supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei in insisting that all international sanctions must be lifted, instead of merely suspended, under the nuclear framework.

The JCPOA (Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action) was the result of negotiations that ended in July between Iran and P5+1 world powers. The United Nations Security Council endorsed the JCPOA, making it international law, on July 20.

Khatami concluded by warning the U.S. against any ideas it may have to use the nuclear agreement as an excuse to spread American political, economic and cultural influence in Iran.
