Thought of a strident Iran aligned with the U.S. terrifies Gulf states

ABU DHABI — The Gulf Cooperation Council has been concerned over the prospect of a strident Iran bolstered by a new alliance with the United States.

Officials from the six-member GCC have expressed worry that the U.S. rapproachment with Iran would encourage its effort to dominate Gulf Arab neighbors.

The officials said under a U.S.-led deal, Teheran would be allowed to retain most of its nuclear program while being relieved of international sanctions.

“It is more important for Iran to improve ties with neighboring countries than with the United States,” Bahraini Foreign Minister Khalid Bin Ahmed Al Khalifa said.
