WASHINGTON — The United States has launched an effort to ensure
logistics for its military in the Gulf in 2012.
The Defense Department has awarded a more than $1 billion contract for
fuel for the U.S. military presence in Gulf Cooperation Council states.
The U.S. military contains a major presence in such GCC states as
Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar and the UAE.
Qatar has been designated the venue of the U.S. Air Force’s regional operational command, including Afghanistan, while the UAE provides facilities for hundreds of American fighter-jets and support platforms.
The $1.09 billion award stipulated the supply of aviation turbine and naval distillate fuel by Texan contractor Refinery Associates.
“Other locations of performance are Qatar and the United Arab Emirates,” the Pentagon said.
In a statement on Dec. 21, the Pentagon did not provide details of
fuel shipments to the Gulf. The statement said the Defense Logistics Agency Energy would implement the contract throughout 2012.
