Syrian rebels deliver ultimatum to Hizbullah

NICOSIA — Syrian rebels have threatened a war against the
Iranian-sponsored Hizbullah.

Sunni rebel commander Brig. Gen. Salim Idris said his troops were
preparing to attack Hizbullah installations throughout the region. Idris
said the attacks would begin unless the Iranian proxy withdraws from Syria,
racked by a revolt against President Bashar Assad over the last two years.

“I will no longer be bound by any commitments I made, if a decision to
stop the attacks is not taken and implemented,” Idris said.

In a statement on May 28, Idris said his Free Syrian Army was organizing
operations against Hizbullah in Lebanon and Syria. The rebel general, head
of the FSA’s Supreme Military Council, said Hizbullah would be given 24
hours to stop all attacks on the rebels.

“If the attacks of Hizbullah against Syrian territory do not stop within
24 hours, we will take all measures to hunt Hizbullah, even in hell,” Idris
said.

On May 26, Sunni rebels claimed responsibility for a rocket attack on
Hizbullah strongholds in Beirut. At the time, Idris denied any
responsibility for the rocket strike on Shi’ite neighborhoods in the
Lebanese capital.

Idris, a former Syrian Army officer, said Hizbullah marked the main
element in the Assad offensive that reversed rebel gains since February
2013. He said Hizbullah has deployed thousands of troops in Syria.

“I can no longer restrain the fighters,” Idris said. “We are being
subjected to a genocide conducted by Hizbullah. I hope that everyone will
excuse the Free [Syrian] Army.”
