NICOSIA — Syria has amassed troops along the border with Lebanon.

Lebanese sources said the Syrian Army has sent infantry and armored units to the Lebanese border near the Bekaa Valley.

“The regime has decided to eliminate the terrorism that stems from
neighboring countries,” a Syrian Army source said.

The Syrian officer was quoted by Lebanon’s MTV as saying that army units
were mobilizing along the Lebanese border. MTV said the Syrian Republican Guard deployed main battle tanks for incursions into Lebanon.

In 2013, the Syrian military repeatedly fired surface-to-surface
missiles toward Sunni rebel strongholds in the Bekaa Valley and other border areas. Lebanon has not responded to the attacks.

The sources said Damascus was alarmed by the search for loyalists to the
Assad regime. They cited a Lebanese warrant for a former Lebanese
parliamentarian, Ali Eid, linked to attacks on Sunni fighters in Lebanon.
Eid’s home in Akar was located just meters from the Syrian force.

Eid has been leader of the pro-Assad Arab Democratic Party and accused
of hiding a suspect in a bombing in which killed nearly 50 people in
the northern city of Tripoli in August 2013.

“This is a clear message that arresting Eid would be considered a red
line and not tolerated,” the pro-Syrian Lebanese daily Al Jumhuriya said on
Nov. 6.
